Here are two of the things that make folding bikes so useful:

1. They are great for mixed mode transportation. I have taken them on trains, busses, planes, and put them behind the back seat of cars as small as a Geo Metro. It is quick and easy to take my bike with me when I go places. Sometimes I ride one way and come home by other means. They are incredibly fun and useful to take along if you have to travel for work.

2. They are small and easily stashed. That is why they are very popular with boaters and people who have to take their bikes up crowded elevators.

I like models with 20″ wheels best. The bikes are small and light enough to transport easily, and the performance is good enough to enjoy riding all day. I have ridden my Dahon Speed P8 as much as 90 miles one day in New England, fully loaded with touring bags. Sure, my full size touring bike would have been a little better for the task, but I had a great time and it was very easy to get my bike across the country to start the trip.

I have had several folding bikes over the last 20 years. Of these my Dahon has seen the most use because it is quick and easy to fold and unfold, it handles very well, and it climbs hills easily. Dahon makes a very broad range of models and they sell for very reasonable prices
